![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But if my life depended on making a choice, it would come down to two: the lush, melodic “Couldn’t Call It Unexpected No.4” (which closes 1991’s Mighty Like a Rose ), and this week’s pick, “Toledo.” This to me is one of those songs that just epitomizes the ability of pop music to convey sophisticated emotion in a way that words can’t, to so perfectly and so simply capture a series of complex feelings and reflect them back to you in a way that guts you and edifies you at the same time. KEVIN DAVIS: Naming a favorite Elvis Costello song has always been something of a hopeless exercise for me, but I can definitely come up with a list of ten or so that are always in the conversation, with one or two usually standing in for certain types of EC song: “Lipstick Vogue” and “Two Little Hitlers” for classic-era Attractions tunes, “Tokyo Storm Warning” and “Episode of Blonde” (the first Costello song I ever loved) for lengthy, verbose shouters, “American Without Tears” for stripped down acoustic stuff, pretty much anything off North for the piano ballads . you get the picture. “Toledo” epitomizes the ability of pop music to convey emotion in a way that words can’t ![]()
